Born in Nov. 21, 1965 in Reykjavik, Iceland, Bjrk Gumundsdttir started exploring her musical side early, enrolling in a children's musical academy at age five. She released a her self-titled debut at the age of 11 in 1977. Bjrk was a hit in Iceland, but its star retreated from childhood fame, forming several punk and experimental bands in her early teen years.

Bjrk gave birth to a son, Sindri, in 1986. Though she soon split romantically from his father, Por Eldon, she soon formed a band with him and several of their mutual collaborators called the SugarCubes.

After the SugarCubes broke up, Bjrk moved to London. The dance culture there inspired her to pursue a dance-oriented solo career, and in 1993 she released Debut.

With 1995 came the more subtle Post, and ever-increasing celebrity, fueled in part by romantic involvement with both Tricky and Goldie.

In 1997, Bjrk decided to take production matters into her own hands and the result was Homogenic, which has placed her in international demand. She will next appear in the musical film "Dancer in the Dark"; she is planning a millennium concert in Reykjavik, and working on her next album, due out in early 2000.
